Wood pellets can sometimes become jammed in the auger.
Causes
Moist Pellets
- If pellets get moist and then dry out, they can set hard in the auger.
- The auger will not be able to rotate at all.
- The auger will likely need to removed, cleaned thoroughly and reinstalled. Click here for instructions.
Jammed Hard Pellet
- One or more pellets can get jammed in the auger, preventing it from rotating.
Solutions
Clean Out Hopper
- First, dump out all the wood pellets and vacuum the bottom of the hopper out so the auger can be clearly viewed.
- Moist pellets: pellets that have got moist and then set hard cannot be easily cleared without potentially damaging the auger motor, so proceed directly to Remove Auger.
- Dry pellets: If pellets loose, clean, dry and shiny (no sign of moisture), the one or more may be jamming the auger.
- Try and identify any pellet that are jammed in place and use end of a screwdriver to tap free.
- Try to feed pellets again. If still stuck proceed to the next method, Unblock Jam.
Unblock Jam
- With the grill in Standby mode (blue controller knob light, not cooking), press MENU, rotate to Feel Pellets, press confirm to select, rotate to Unblock Jam, press to confirm.
- The auger motor will rotate forward and backwards several times to attempt to clear the jam.
- As the auger attempts to rotate, watch the auger for signs of movement. If there is no movement at all (still stuck) press the control knob to stop the operation of the auger motor. Proceed to the next method, Remove Auger.
Remove Auger
- If wood pellets have got moist and set hard, or are jammed such that the Unblock Jam rotating method is unable to free them, the auger shaft needs to be removed and cleaned and then assembled back in place.
