First Use (Burn In) of S1 Grill

Please review important safety guidelines before using the grill.

Before cooking on the Trimal S1 for the first time, a few important steps must be completed to ensure safe and optimal operation.

Following these steps also ensures you know how to correctly use the grill before inviting mates around for a huge cookup!

Update Grill Software

  • Grill software is regularly updated with improvements so please update before first use.
  • Click here to learn how to update the grill.

Prepare The Grill

  • Remove the stainless steel grill racks and wash with warm soapy water before first cook. Leave out during the initial burn in.
  • Install the right drip tray, left drip tray and vent cover.
  • For now do not cover the drip trays with aluminium foil.

Prime Wood Pellets

  • Pour 2~3 kilograms of wood pellets into the hopper (2 bars on the pellet level gauge).
  • This process of priming pellets is only required if the hopper is totally empty, not before each cook.
  • The auger will run for 15 seconds to fill the auger tube and a few pellets may begin to fall into the fire grate.

Follow the step by step process outlined below:

  1. Flick on the power switch located on the back of hopper.
  2. Press and hold controller power button for 2 seconds to turn the controller on.
  3. Tap the MENU button, rotate to Feed Pellets, then press control knob to confirm.
  4. Select Fill Auger Tube and press control knob to confirm.
  5. The auger will run for 15 seconds

Fire Up & Burn In Grill

  • Before the first cook, the grill must be fired up and “burnt in” by heating to 200℃ (392℉) on medium smoke level for 15 minutes. Using medium smoke ensures the heating element is also activated.
  • The high temperatures ensure all the internal components are clean of any oil or other contaminants that may be present from the production process.
  • Part of the joy of owning a new Trimal S1 is seeing the flames reflecting off the shiny new stainless steel – so leave the lid open until flames are visible.

Follow the steps below to fire up and burn in:

  1. Press and hold controller power button to turn grill on (if not already on).
  2. Press MENU button, select Auto, then press control knob to confirm.
  3. Select Start Cooking, then press control knob to confirm.
  4. Rotate the control knob to set to 200℃ (392℉), then press control knob to confirm.
  5. Rotate the control knob to adjust in singe degree increments.
    • This step is just to teach you how to use this feature.
    • Set the temperature to anywhere from 200 to 210℃ (392 to 410℉), as you wish.
  6. Rotate the control knob to select MEDIUM smoke, then press control knob to confirm.
  7. As soon as flames are visible reflecting off the inner walls of the grill (after 1 – 2 minutes), close the lid.
  8. Normally the grill can be fired up with the lid shut, but this first time have the lid open to see pretty flames!
  9. Once the grill reaches 200℃ (392℉), wait at least 15 minutes, then proceed to the Shut Down step.
  10. It is normal for the temperature to exceed the target at first before stabilising, so do not be concerned if it initially reaches 220 to 230℃ (428 to 446℉).

Shut Down Grill

  • Never just turn off or unplug the grill, instead use the Shut Down function to shut it down safely.
  • While shutting down, the fan will run for 10 minutes to allow all wood pellets to burn out. The fan will first operate at a medium speed, then a higher speed towards the end to blow lighter out ash of the fire grate.
  • Once the fan has turned off the grill will power itself down.
  • The power switch on the back can be switched off and power unplugged.
  • The grill will not be harmed by leaving the switch turned on. It will will go into lower power mode but remain connected to WIFI, so still visible in the Trimal Aus App.

Follow the steps below to shut down:

  • Press MENU button, select Shut Down, then press control knob to confirm.
  • Select YES, then press control knob to confirm.
  • The auger will stop feeding pellets, the heating element will turn off and the fan will run for 10 minutes to burn the pellets out.
  • The fan speed with change during the shut down process, first low speed to allow the fire to burn out, then high speed to blow light ash out of the fire grate.
